Breaking NewsThe email revenue gap most businesses don't know they have

Google Search Console now connects to social media. Here's how to set it up and what the data tells you.

Google Search Console added something genuinely useful in July 2026: the ability to connect social media accounts directly, without needing a website, and see how that content performs in Search and Discover.

It's called platform properties. Most marketers haven't set it up yet. That's worth fixing, and not just for the SEO data.

What platform properties are

Until now, Search Console was tied to websites. You verified a domain or URL prefix, then saw how your web pages ranked.

Platform properties work differently. You connect a social account and Google shows you how that account's content performs in Search and Discover as a standalone reporting view. Clicks, impressions, average position, click-through rate, top queries, top posts — the same core data you get for a website, applied to your social presence.

This matters because your social content has always been appearing in Google results. Reels, TikToks, posts with high engagement — these surface in Search and Discover regardless of whether you had visibility into them. Platform properties just give you the reporting to see it.

Which platforms are supported

Instagram, TikTok, X (formerly Twitter), and YouTube are supported at launch. Facebook and LinkedIn are not currently available.

YouTube users should note that if they already have a YouTube channel connected as a Search Console property, that's a separate setup from platform properties — you may want both.

How to connect your accounts

The process takes under five minutes per account.

  1. Go to Google Search Console and sign in
  2. Click the property selector in the top left corner
  3. Select "Add property"
  4. Choose "Social media account" as the property type
  5. Select your platform from the list
  6. Follow the verification steps — typically authorising Google to access the account, or confirming ownership via a platform-specific method
  7. Repeat for each platform you want to connect

Data starts appearing within a few days. If the dashboard looks empty immediately after setup, that's expected — check back in 48–72 hours.

You can connect multiple platform properties and switch between them in the same Search Console interface. Each one sits alongside your website property in the account.

What you actually get from the data

The most valuable report is the queries view.

Impressions tell you how often your content is appearing in Google results. Clicks tell you how often people are actually tapping through. Average position gives you a rough sense of where you're surfacing relative to other results.

But the queries report is the one worth spending time in. It shows you the exact phrases people searched when they found or clicked on your social content. That's a direct window into how your content is being discovered — not just by your existing followers, but by people who had never heard of you and found your post through search.

Top posts by clicks tells you which of your social content is generating search traffic, not just platform engagement. These two things don't always correlate. A post with high likes might generate almost no search activity. A post that performed moderately on the platform might be driving steady search clicks for weeks.

Where email fits into this

Here's the part most people miss when they think about social search data.

When someone sees a piece of your content and then searches Google for something related, that sequence tells you something specific. They were interested enough to want more. They moved from passive scroll to active search. That's intent, and it's more valuable than an engagement metric.

The queries driving search traffic from your social accounts are the exact topics your audience is actively trying to learn more about after your content prompted them. Not what they liked or saved — what they went and searched for.

That's the same information you'd spend time and money trying to figure out for your email content strategy.

Most email teams build content calendars based on what they think is interesting or what performed well on social. GSC platform property data gives you a more useful input: what your audience was interested enough to search for after seeing your content. That's the difference between assumed interest and demonstrated intent.

Look at your top queries each month. Pick the two or three that are generating the most clicks but probably have no corresponding email content. Build from there.

Social creates the awareness. Email is where you capture the relationship and actually do something with it. Search Console tells you which content is doing the bridging.

A note on timing

Platform properties were rolled out globally by late July 2026, so if you set up your account in the past few weeks, you should be seeing data now. If you haven't connected your accounts yet, the setup is worth doing this week while the feature is still relatively new — your historical data will start accumulating from the point of connection, so there's no advantage in waiting.

If you want to understand how your email program is actually performing once that social-to-search-to-email pipeline is in place, the email audit is a good place to start.

Frequently asked

As of mid-2026, Google Search Console supports Instagram, TikTok, X (formerly Twitter), and YouTube as platform properties. Facebook and LinkedIn are not currently supported.

No. Platform properties are standalone — you connect the social account directly without needing a website property in Search Console. You can have both a website property and one or more platform properties in the same account.

You get the same core performance data available for website properties: clicks, impressions, average position, and click-through rate. You also see the top queries people searched after engaging with your content, and which of your posts are driving the most search activity.

Google typically takes a few days to start populating data after you connect a platform property. If the dashboard looks empty immediately after setup, that's normal — check back in 48–72 hours.

Yes, and it's one of the more underrated uses of the feature. The queries people search after seeing your social content reveal what topics are creating genuine interest — not just engagement. Those same topics are worth building email opt-in offers and nurture sequences around, because they represent real intent rather than passive scroll behaviour.
